A few of us from the walking group went to Cheddar for the weekend of 25th-27th February. Here are a few photos.
Saturday's walk started by going up onto the hills to the east of the gorge. There's a view tower where the path levels off with some great views over Cheddar and across the gorge.
Going along the ridge alongside the gorge, it continues to climb for some time before descending back down to the road. There are lots of good views of the gorge along the route.
We crossed the road and went up a track to an old quarry where we stopped for lunch.
We went further along the valley, called Velvet Bottom, apparently because of the rabbits keeping the grass trimmed.
After reaching the furthest point of our walk just beyond Charterhouse, we turned and headed west, towards Beacon Batch, the highest point in the Mendips.
At this point my camera battery finally died, so I don't have any more photos.
For Sunday's walk we started at the Swan Inn at Rowberrow. We walked up the road past this rather nice church, then turned off and headed straight up onto the hill fort at Dolebury Warren.
From here we went along the ridge, then down into the forest.
We went along by a stream, then up the side of the forest, before emerging onto Black Down.
From here we walked back to the pub, mostly along the West Mendip way.
