Dartmoor

On the May day weekend (29 April to 1 May), there was a walking group trip to Dartmoor.

We stayed at Steps Bridge Youth Hostel. This was a funny little hut in the woods. Rather ramshackle, but nice and friendly. It's a shame they're closing it this year.

We drove down on the friday evening, and had dinner in the pub in nearby Dunsford.

Saturday

We drove to Manaton, and climbed up onto Hayne Down.

We bought an ice-cream from this snack bar with an appalling name.

We climbed up Hound Tor, then continued along that track until we got to a nice spot for lunch.

After that we walked down the road to Becky Falls (not much of the falls are visible unless you pay to get in), and through the woods to Water.

After a pint in the pub, we walked back to Manaton, going past a house with grass on it.

When we got back to Manaton we had a very good cream tea in the village hall.

Sunday

We drove to Widecombe in the Moor for Sunday's walk. We climbed up onto Hamel Down, and then along the ridge.

We ate our lunch in the bronze age village at Grimspound.

After lunch we came down off the moors and walked down the road a bit, then up to Bonehill Rocks and back down to Widecombe.

After finishing the walk and having a cup of tea, we drove up to Haytor.

After climbing Haytor rocks, we did a short walk around the area to look at the quarries and the granite tramways. I didn't take my camera.

Monday

We did a short walk in the morning; having first arranged to leave cars at the end, we left directly from the Youth hostel along the river.

Why do the cows want a satellite dish?

We finished up at Fingle Bridge, where we ate lunch before driving home.
