Peak District weekend

On the bank holiday weekend (25-28 May) we stayed in Castleton Youth Hostel.

Saturday

The weather was very pleasant before we started the walk, as we sat out in the courtyard of the hostel.

We set off through the village, and across the valley towards the main path up to the ridge between Castleton and Edale

By now it had started raining. Fortunately this didn't last.

We reached the top of the hill, with a great view in all directions.

We continued along the ridge to Back Tor and on to Lose Hill, where we stopped to eat bananas.

We walked down the end of the ridge, and stopped for lunch before heading along Edale to the Nag's Head pub

Sunday

On Sunday morning we did a shorter walk. We started off from the Youth Hostel, and walked up Cave Dale.

We emerged from Cave Dale onto flat open country. The drizzle continued and now we were out of the shelter there was a cold wind, so it felt very unpleasant.

We climbed up Mam Tor.

We retraced our steps to the bottom of Mam Tor, and then headed home via the broken road (the former A625, built in 1819 to bypass the very steep Winnatts Pass, repaired many times after landslides over the following 160 years, and eventually abandoned in 1979).

Speedwell Cavern

In the afternoon, a few of us decided to visit Speedwell Cavern.

Monday

On Monday morning we did another short walk. We drove to the car park between Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs. We walked up into the forest above the reservoirs, then back down and along by the side of Ladybower.
